Dendroclimatic Reconstruction of Mean Annual Temperatures over Treeline Regions of Northern Bhutan Himalayas

The Himalayan region is likely particularly exposed to climate change indicated by the high regional rate of change. number high-resolution, well-calibrated, and long-term paleoclimate reconstructions are however regrettably few, set this in a longer-term context. dendroclimatic over Himalaya that do exist have only reconstructed summer season temperatures, rarely or never attempted reconstruct mean annual temperatures. paucity long meteorological records matter concern when developing chronologies sensitive tree-ring data Bhutan, but would theoretically be potential for extending short back time using trees high-elevation ecotones. objectives study were explore signals width Abies densa growing these extreme ecotones reconstruct, if possible, temperatures Northern Bhutan. A point-by-point regression analysis revealed composite chronology was significantly positively correlated with all months current year, i.e., January December. highly (calibration period R = 0.67 validation 0.50; p < 0.001) allowing reconstruction temperature Bhutan (NB-TEMR). NB-TEMR reveals some common variations Hemisphere as well region, w.r.t recent warming trend. covers 1765 2017. This trend since 1850 higher rates 1935 2017, pause around 1940–1970. consistent reduced volcanic activity increase greenhouse gases.
